Neutral Motions in the Polar Thermosphere for Northward Interplanetary Magnetic Field

چکیده
On 24th November, 1982, The North-South (Bz) component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) became positive for a period of about 11 hours reaching a relatively large and steady value of---25 nT. During this rare occurrence, the Dynamics Explorer-2 (DE-2) spacecraft was in a configuration that enabled the dynamics of both ionic and neutral species of the high-latitude F-region to be measured simultaneously along the track of the polar-orbiting satellite. Results from two Northern (winter) polar passes of DE-2, extracted from a larger data set, are shown to illustrate the response of the neutral F-region to ion drag forcing arising from a configuration of ion convection characteristic of strongly northward IMF. The measured neutral winds differ appreciably from those more commonly observed for periods of southward IMFo The multicellular ion drift pattern associated with positive Bz is observed to drive a similar but less structured and weaker neutral wind configuration in the winter polar cap. Major features of the ion drift pattern are mimicked by the neutral circulation but smaller-scale and more irregular structures of ion flow are not. This is ascribed to the relatively long time constant (few hours) for momentum exchange between the ion and neutral gases. The results demonstrate that sunward flow of neutral gas can be established and maintained by ion drag in the central polar cap for positive Bz.

Ionospheric control of the magnetospheric configuration: Thermospheric neutral winds
[1] In this study we present the first results from the University of Michigan’s coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere general circulation model. This code is a combination of the Michigan MHD model with the NCAR thermosphere-ionosphereelectrodynamics general circulation model (TIEGCM). The MHD code provides specification of the high-latitude ionospheric electric potential and the parti...

We conduct a statistical analysis of the coherence and phase difference of low frequency geomagnetic fluctuations between two Antarctic stations, Mario Zucchelli Station (geographic coordinates: 74.7 S, 164.1 E; corrected geomagnetic coordinates: 80.0 S, 307.7 E) and Scott Base (geographic coordinates: 77.8 S 166.8 E; corrected geomagnetic coordinates: 80.0 S 326.5 E), both located in the polar...
متن کاملFilamentary field-aligned currents at the polar cap region during northward interplanetary magnetic field derived with the Swarm constellation
ESA's Swarm constellation mission makes it possible for the first time to determine field-aligned currents (FACs) in the ionosphere uniquely. In particular at high latitudes, the dual-satellite approach can reliably detect some FAC structures which are missed by the traditional single-satellite technique. These FAC events occur preferentially poleward of the auroral oval and during times of nor...
متن کاملCLUSTER observations of electron outflowing beams carrying downward currents above the polar cap by northward IMF
Above the polar cap, at about 5–9 Earth radii (RE) altitude, the PEACE experiment onboard CLUSTER detected, for the first time, electron beams outflowing from the ionosphere with large and variable energy fluxes, well collimated along the magnetic field lines. All these events occurred during periods of northward or weak interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). These outflowing beams were generally...
متن کاملTranspolar arcs observed simultaneously in both hemispheres
Two coexisting transpolar arcs are observed on 31 August 2005. We track the formation and motion of the arcs in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, using data from two independent satellites (Imager for Magnetopause to Aurora Global Exploration and a Defence Meteorological Satellite Program satellite). The observations are supported by supplementary ground-based ionospheric convection d...
